The Pitfall Trap

This is an easy trap to make, it's simply a jar sunk into the ground so that the top of the jar is at ground level. The bugs then fall into the jar. You can use this in different habitats such as on the school field, in long grass, in a flower bed and under trees. Leave the trap overnight and make sure you check it daily. Be sure to make a cover as shown so that the trap does not fill with rain and put a small amount of soil and maybe a small piece of twig inside so that the bugs can right themselves if they land on their backs.

Pitfall trap, make sure the soil is level with the top of the jar.

with rain/sun cover.  Make sure that there is space for bugs to walk under the cover. You may have to sit the cover on three or four stones to raise it.
