Log pile and lifting log area

The log pile - Create a log pile to provide a great habitat for lots of bugs including woodlice, beetles, spiders etc. Make sure that the log pile is never disturbed, this is a habitat that can only be explored from the outside.

Lifting logs - These are to allow children to find out what lives underneath logs. Use logs that are just large enough to move and make sure that they are always put back exactly where they were. If they are moved from place to place you will not find many bugs underneath them.
Try one log area in an open sunny area and one in a shady damp area and compare your results.

The log area does need much maintenace at all. Just let the grass and other plants grow in the area, childrens feet will make sure it does not get overgrown. Just keep a check to stop nettles and brambles getting a hold.
